The bird's nest fern (Asplenium nidus) is a slow-growing evergreen with bright green, strap-like fronds that form a vase-shaped rosette. Outdoors, fronds reach 4-5 ft long and 8 in wide, while indoors they max out at 1.5-2 ft. The undersides feature spore clusters in a herringbone pattern.
Native to tropical regions, these ferns naturally inhabit rainforest trees, collecting water and debris in their bowl-shaped rosettes. They thrive in moderate, indirect light and consistent humidity. As houseplants, they prefer rich, moist, well-drained soil with added grit and a minimum temperature of 50ºF. Grow them in containers or outdoors in part to full shade for a lush, tropical touch.
