The heartleaf fern (Hemionitis arifolia) is a compact, evergreen fern known for its glossy, heart-shaped leaves. Native to Southeast Asia’s tropical forests, it thrives as a houseplant, especially in terrariums, thanks to its love of high humidity. The plant features two types of fronds: the classic heart-shaped, deep green sterile leaves, and longer, arrowhead-shaped fertile fronds that rise above the main foliage. Its leaves grow on slender, dark stems, and the fern stays petite, usually reaching just 6 to 10 inches tall and wide. In nature, it often grows on trees or logs rather than in soil. For best results indoors, provide bright, indirect light, maintain high humidity, and keep the soil moist but not soggy—filtered or distilled water is ideal. A warm spot (60–85°F) and loose, well-draining soil will help this fern flourish.
