Syngonium, often called the arrowhead plant or vine, is a popular genus of tropical, evergreen climbing plants native to the rainforests of Central and South America. Its most distinguishing feature is its foliage, which changes shape as the plant matures. Juvenile leaves are typically simple and heart- or arrowhead-shaped, but mature leaves become deeply lobed or divided into multiple leaflets. Cultivated varieties are available in a wide array of colors and variegations, including green, white, pink, and red, though the wild species is typically green. While it starts with a bushy appearance, Syngonium will develop a trailing, vine-like growth habit over time and can also be trained to climb. This adaptable nature, combined with its relatively low-maintenance needs, makes it a favored houseplant. It thrives in bright, indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels. However, it is important to note that all parts of the plant contain toxic calcium oxalate crystals and should be kept away from pets and children. Although it rarely flowers indoors, in its native habitat it produces inconspicuous greenish-white flowers on a spike.
